Renowned Investigative Journalist Bob Woodward to Visit Holy Cross

Talk to be followed by book signing

Bob Woodward, one of America’s most accomplished investigative journalists, non-fiction author, and former assistant managing editor of The Washington Post, will deliver the 45th Hanify-Howland Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom at the College of the Holy Cross. It is free and open to the public.

Woodward has worked for The Washington Post since 1971, and is currently an associate editor of the Post. He found success early in his career by investigating, along with reporter Carl Bernstein, the 1972 Watergate break-in, ultimately exposing the Nixon White House connection and cover-up.  The Post was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for the groundbreaking investigation.  Their bestselling exposé All the President’s Men (Simon & Schuster, 1974) was also adapted into a feature film of the same name.

Woodward is also the author of numerous best-selling, non-fiction books, covering topics such as the Central Intelligence Agency, the United States Supreme Court, biographies on notable public figures; as well as the Bush at War series, detailing President George W. Bush’s presidency, focusing primarily on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Woodward’s most recent work, Obama’s Wars (Simon & Schuster), was released September 27, 2010.  Copies of Obama’s Wars will be available for sale at the Holy Cross bookstore prior to the keynote address, which will be followed by a book signing.

The annual Hanify-Howland lecture honors the late Edward F. Hanify, a 1904 graduate of Holy Cross and a Massachusetts Superior Court justice for 15 years, who died in 1954. The series was started by Hanify’s friend, the late Weston Howland of Milton, Mass., board chairman of Warwick Mills, Inc., who died in 1976.

Since 1965, the Hanify-Howland lecture series has brought to the Holy Cross campus a series of distinguished speakers on public affairs who have exemplified in their own work the spirit of public service that the series was established to encourage.  Past speakers include Retired Lieutenant General Brent Scowcroft, USAF; Hon. Clarence Thomas '71, Supreme Court justice; and Ruth Wedgwood, director of the Program in International Law and Organizations at Johns Hopkins University. In keeping with the traditional practice of the Hanify-Howland Series, Woodward will also conduct two seminars on campus, which will allow students to interact with the speaker in an intimate and intellectually exciting environment.
