Video: South African Students Explore Race and Diversity in Immersion Program

Despite the end of apartheid nearly 20 years ago, South Africa remains deeply divided along color lines. Racism and prejudice are particularly evident in the nation's universities, many of which have struggled to integrate classrooms and residence halls.

In response, the historically-white University of the Free State sent a group of student ambassadors to the U.S. earlier this month for a 2-week study abroad experience focused on issues of race, cross-cultural dynamics, reconciliation, and social justice. Seven students visited Holy Cross. They stayed with student hosts in the residence halls, attended classes and participated in co-curricular programming related to diversity.

At the end of their stay, they took time out to educate the Holy Cross community about their country..
