Blog: Unique Health Professions Program a Draw for McDonough ’14

NAME Lauren McDonough ’14

HOMETOWN Norwood, Mass.

AREAS OF STUDY English major in the Health Professions Advisory Program

WHY SHE CHOSE HOLY CROSS “My decision was ultimately between a large research university and Holy Cross, but I chose the latter because of the advantages that a small campus and a faculty that focuses exclusively on undergraduates could offer me. The other big draw for me was that I could be both an English major and student in the Health Professions Advisory Program — something that I did not see as a viable option at any other school I applied to.”

ACTIVITIES “Currently, I am a disc jockey on the College radio station, WCHC 88.1 FM. I am focusing most of my energy on my schoolwork right now as I feel that it is especially important to excel academically freshman year, but I look forward to becoming involved in activities such as the Campus Activities Board, intramural sports, and volunteering with the American Medical Student Association as the year goes on. Next year, I’ll apply for Purple Key Society and possibly a resident assistant position.”

WHAT SHE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO “All of the interesting courses that I’ll take at Holy Cross — my experience with professors and small classes has been excellent so far! I am especially enjoying my Montserrat class and am really excited to see how that unfolds over the course of the year. I am also looking forward to becoming involved with leadership and volunteer activities around campus. I’ve formed lots of great friendships already in my short time on the Hill and can’t wait to meet more people.”

WHY SHE’S BLOGGING “During my own application process, I found student blogs — especially those at Holy Cross — to be extremely helpful in getting a real sense of what it is like to be a college student. I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at Holy Cross, and I would love for my blog to encourage prospective students to spend their own four years here as well. I think my blog will serve as an excellent resource for prospective students and their families, alumni, my own friends and family, and those simply interested in learning more about Holy Cross.”
