Holy Cross to Inaugurate Fr. Boroughs as 32nd President of the College on Sept. 14

Installation ceremony to be streamed live on website

The College of the Holy Cross will celebrate the inauguration of Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., as its 32nd president with a number of events from Sept. 12 to 15. The installation ceremony will take place in the Hart Recreation Center on Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. EDT. Those who cannot attend are invited to view the live webcast at 3 p.m. EDT.

During the ceremony, Fr. Boroughs will deliver formal remarks before assembled guests, including Holy Cross faculty, staff, students, alumni, and more than 100 presidents and delegates from colleges and universities across the United States.  John J. DiGioia, president of Georgetown University, will deliver the inaugural address, and P. Kevin Condron ’67, chair of the Board of Trustees, will preside at the presidential installation.

Fr. Boroughs, formerly vice president for mission at Georgetown, has served as a Holy Cross trustee since 2008.  He assumed office as president of Holy Cross in January, succeeding Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., who served for 12 years.

In addition to the ceremony, a number of other inauguration events are planned:
  • A reception for Worcester area religious leaders on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Ciampi Hall.

  • On Sept. 13, a faculty symposium titled "Imagining Teaching and Learning at a Jesuit, Liberal Arts College in the 21st Century" will be held in the Main Reading Room of Dinand Library. Holy Cross panelists include Robert Bellin, associate professor of biology, Ericka Fisher, associate professor of education and Jonathan Mulrooney, associate professor of English. Guest panelists include Sr. Janet Eisner, president of Emmanuel College, Nathan Hatch, president of Wake Forest University, and Daniel Porterfield, president of Franklin & Marshall College.

  • A Mass for Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the College’s namesake feast day, will take place at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel on Sept. 14.

  • A student-designed celebration in Kimball Quad on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. following the 1p.m. Holy Cross vs. Brown football game.
