In a story on WGBH news, Ann McDermott, director of admissions at the College of the Holy Cross, commented on the Supreme Court’s recent ruling regarding race-conscious admissions policies in higher education. The ruling, which specifically regarded the University of Texas’ affirmative action policy, stated that while the policy is constitutional, it is only so when it is the only way to attain campus diversity.
Responding to news of the ruling, McDermott said, “I think we have to wait and see how it rolls out, going forward, to see what kind of impact it does have on colleges and universities.” Then, further reflecting on possible implications, she continued, saying, “[B]ut it was somewhat of a surprise.” While there is controversy still surrounding both the case and the ruling—which has made affirmative action a highly visible issue—McDermott admitted that admissions directors nationwide are keeping tabs on any programs that could be construed as preferential.
