Blog: Holy Cross President Reflects on Ignatian Pilgrimage

Pilgrims to trace the footsteps of St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits

WHAT Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., president of the College of the Holy Cross, will lead a pilgrimage to visit sites in Spain and Rome that are significant in the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits.

WHO ELSE IS GOING Fr. Boroughs will be accompanied by about 30 members from the College’s Board of Trustees, Advisory Board, and senior leadership team, some of whom will also be sharing their thoughts in this blog.

WHY THEY’RE GOING The pilgrimage — which dozens of Holy Cross faculty and administrators have previously embarked upon — is designed to enrich the understanding of the College's Jesuit mission, and provide new perspectives on the distinctive place of Holy Cross in higher education today.

WHEN June 9-16

WHERE Through Northern Spain, the pilgrims will follow Ignatius' path from Loyola Castle, the site of his birth and conversion while recovering from battle wounds, to the cave at Manresa where he lived for nearly a year, praying and practicing what would become his Spiritual Exercises. The pilgrimage continues with visits to the monastery at Montserrat, the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier and the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Then, in Rome, they will visit Ignatius’ home, the church he founded, and the sites of other early Jesuit ministries.
