Internationally Renowned Organist and Cornettist to Perform as Part of Chapel Artists Series

Liuwe Tamminga, a renowned organist, and Bruce Dickey, an award-winning cornettist, will perform as part of the Chapel Artists Series on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel at the College of the Holy Cross. The concert program, titled “That lascivious cornetto...,” will feature works by Trabaci, Palestrina, Trombetti, Giovanni Gabrielli, Guami, Murcia and Greco. The performances are free, open to the public, and handicap accessible.

Tamminga, who is considered one of the major specialists of 16th- and 17th- century Italian repertoires for organ, is the organist of the historic organs at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna together with Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, where he plays the magnificent instruments by Lorenzo da Prato (1471-75) and Baldassarre Malamini (1596). He has also recorded several award-winning albums.

Dickey is one of a handful of musicians worldwide who have dedicated themselves to reviving the cornetto, once an instrument of great popularity, but which lamentably fell into disuse in the 19th - century. The revival began in the 1950s, but it was largely Dickey, who, from the late 1970s, created a new renaissance of the instrument. He has also been awarded the prestigious Christopher Monk Award for “his monumental work in cornetto performance, historical performance practice and musicological scholarship” by the Historic Brass Society, among other distinguished awards.

Future performances of the 2014-15 concert series include:

  • Sunday, Nov. 16 - Jonathan Moyer, organist
  • Sunday, Nov. 23 - Music of Christopher Willcock S.J.
  • Sunday, Apr. 12 - William Porter, organist
