Blog: What's It Like to Live in England? Chen '17 Can't Wait to Find Out

NAME Ellen Chen ’17

HOMETOWN Waltham, Mass.

AREAS OF STUDY Math major, Architectural Studies minor

WHERE SHE’S STUDYING University of York, UK

WHY SHE CHOSE ENGLAND “I wanted to study in an English-speaking country. For someone who has never left the states, deciding to study in another country for a year was already a big decision. As a New England girl, surrounded by historic ties to England, I’ve always been fascinated by England’s history,. I’ve gone from calling New England home to now living in England.”

WHAT SHE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO “I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the English culture, meeting new people, and of course going to lecture. Math is a universal subject (it’s the same everywhere) but I’m excited to experience how math is taught in the UK education system. I’m also excited to cook for myself (there is no Kimball here). It will definitely be a year where I gain independence."

WHY SHE’S BLOGGING “I’ve been blogging since my first year at Holy Cross, and I truly love sharing my experiences. Looking back at my past posts is something I do from time to time, and I love being reminded of what I’ve experienced so far on The Hill. I’m sure that years from now, I’ll look back at the posts from my time in England, and smile at the experiences.”
