Holy Cross Music Department Announces the Fall 2016 Concert Series

The College of the Holy Cross music department kicked off its fall concert series with a First Tuesday Lunch Concert featuring cellist and artist-in-residence Jan Müller-Szeraws. Performances this fall include a jazz improvisation concert; a Holy Cross Chamber Players concert featuring Mark Kroll on piano and Carol Lieberman on violin; and the Gamelan Gita Sari concert.

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m., the Holy Cross Chamber Players, along with Mark Kroll, piano, and associate professor of music Carol Lieberman, violin, will playJ.S. Bach Through the Eyes and Ears of Mendelssohn, Moscheles, and Schumann” in the Brooks Concert Hall. This performance will consist of Bach's famous “Chaconne in D minor” for unaccompanied violin as arranged for violin and piano by Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann, along with three preludes from Bach's “Well-Tempered Clavier,” as arranged for violin and piano by Ignaz Moscheles.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 8 p.m., celebrated clarinetist Carlos Cordeiro will perform pieces of the 20th century avant-garde, including Stockhausen’s exquisite “Tierkreis,” with ensemble mise-en member and pianist Dorothy Chan, and Kagel’s “Schattenklänge” in the Brooks Concert Hall. This performance will also feature the world premiere of associate professor of music Chris Arrell’s “Altamira 1b” for clarinet and electronics.

The Artist-in-Residence Concert in the Brooks Concert Hall will showcase musical performances by the Brooks Scholars and the artist-in-residence Jan Müller-Szeraws. Titled “Gods, Prophets, and Precious Little Things,” the performers will draw on works by Haydn, Kurtag, Schumann, Wolf, Liszt and Dvorak. During this performance, the performers' challenge will be to communicate the range of this expressive palette with depth and imagination.

The concert series will include the following musical performances on campus throughout the fall semester. All events are free and open to the public. For additional information, please contact the music department events line at 508-793-3503.
