In a recent article about “Worcester’s eyes looking eastward” during the last 50 years of Boston sports, the Telegram & Gazette remembers “what is considered to be the greatest upset in college hockey history.”

On March 23, 2006, the men’s ice hockey team made history as they defeated No. 1 seed Minnesota in overtime with a score of 4-3. Holy Cross’ win is the first time a No. 4 seed ever defeated a No. 1 seed.

“The Holy Cross hockey team came in as an underdog. Now it will try to leave as the top dog. In what stands as one of the greatest upsets in NCAA tournament history, the Crusaders topped Minnesota, 4-3, in overtime last night in a West Regional first-round game,” the article said.
