Holy Cross Responds to Hurricane Harvey Devastation

In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey, the Chaplains' Office is coordinating a collective relief effort for the College.

The office will be designating the funds we collect to share between two organizations, reports Marybeth Kearns-Barrett, director of the Chaplains’ Office:

  • Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School in Houston - Aid will be designated for their students and families who have been most impacted by the flooding. Cristo Rey Jesuit serves students from low-income families in the Houston area.
  • Catholic Charities of Galveston-Houston - Aid will be designated for refugee and immigrant families impacted by flooding. Catholic Charities in Galveston-Houston has deep roots and extensive relationships with refugee and immigrant communities in the region.

In a recent article on the aid response, Catholic Charities President, Sister Donna Markham suggested that material supplies being shipped into the area from other parts of the country are accumulating outside the disaster area, so at this early stage cash donations that can be put to immediate use by local agencies may be the best way to respond, says Kearns-Barrett.

Donations (cash or check made payable to Holy Cross) can be dropped off at Campion House or Human Resources between now and Thursday, Sept. 7. Donations will also be collected at all of the chapel liturgies this weekend, Sept. 2-3. Donations can also be made to Catholic Charities directly by texting CCUSADISASTER to 71777.

“We also want to be supportive of those among us who are from the devastated region or who have loved ones there,” says Kearns-Barrett. “We grieve the loss of life and the destruction of homes, communities, and possessions. Students from Houston and surrounding communities will be having dinner at Campion House with faculty and chaplains with ties to the area on Wednesday night. If you are from the impacted region and would like to join us please let me know by Monday, Sept. 4.”
