Holy Cross Students Celebrate Black History Month with Fashion Live from the Red Carpet

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Black Student Union (BSU) at the College of the Holy Cross is holding its 11th annual Black and Gold Fashion Show and Dinner. The semi-formal event will be held on Friday, Feb. 6 at Mechanics Hall in downtown Worcester. Seating will begin at 6:45 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and the fashion show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets (dinner included) cost $15 for Holy Cross students, $20 for Consortium students, and $24 for staff, faculty, and the public. Tables cost $110 and general admission balcony seats (dinner not included) cost $8. Tickets are on sale in the Hogan Campus Center Lobby on Jan. 29, 30 and Feb. 2 – 5 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. The event celebrates black culture and history.

Forty Holy Cross students will be strutting their stuff, representing all classes, shapes, sizes, and diverse ethnic backgrounds. They will wear the latest urban, casual, formal, seasonal, and career wear donated by local stores, including David's Bridal, Cache, Delia's, Bonardi's Formal Wear, Tush Denim, Everything But Water, and MOD Boston. Entertainment will be provided by Fusion Hip Hop, Rhythm Nation Steppaz, and the Boys and Girls Club.

Each year, the BSU donates part of the proceeds from the show to an “organization supporting a cause that is beneficial to the greater good of society, and has an impact on the lives of the youth in a community,” said Monica Kennedy, co-chair of the BSU. This year, the money will be going to YouthAIDS, an organization in Washington, D.C. that uses a multi-media approach to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. “One of the purposes of the Black and Gold Fashion Show and Dinner is to break the silence about HIV/AIDS and educate people about this pandemic and the importance of being safe and getting tested,” Kennedy said.

The BSU’s principle objective is to promote a sense of unity among the black community at Holy Cross. Originally designed as a support group, the BSU works to help black students develop and expand their potential as active campus members.
