The sold-out Hart Center erupted in hoops of joy Friday night, as the men’s basketball team scored a 74-66 win over Bucknell and seized their fifth Patriot League Tournament title in Holy Cross history.
The Holy Cross women’s basketball team—fresh from their own 56-48 win over American University on Wednesday night and savoring their 11th Patriot League title—were out in force to support their classmates. Wearing “Dance With Us” T-shirts, they got their wish: Both the men’s and women’s teams are heading to the “big dance” with automatic berths in the NCAA tournament.
Senior co-captains Torey Thomas and Keith Simmons led the Crusaders in scoring. Thomas had a season-high 28 points and Simmons added 23.
The men’s team won 18 of its last 20 on the way to the title.
In the women’s win over American, first year student Bethany O’Dell tallied 20 points while classmate Briana McFadden and senior Kaitlin Foley added 14 points each to lead the Crusaders past American. It was the first time that the two teams met in a Patriot League Championship game in the 16-year history of the League.
