The Holy Cross Theatre Department Presents "Liola"

The theater department at the College of the Holy Cross will set historic precedence this November with its production of Luigi Pirandello's "Liola." This play has never been performed professionally in the United States, and there is no record of it ever being a college production... until now! The much anticipated performances will be on November 2,3,4, and 9,10,11 at 8 p.m. in Fenwick Theatre at Holy Cross.

"Liola" is a romantic comedy about life in a small Sicilian village at the turn of the last century. A handsome young rogue does wrong in order to do right when he discovers his old girlfriend is being abused by her husband. Nobel laureate Luigi Pirandello's homage to the land of his birth presents, in song and dance, the joyful, sensuous world of rural Sicily. The light hearted production is both amusing and deeply moving as it portrays the fate of Mita--the old sweetheart of Liola--- who now faces a seemingly hopeless situation. Pirandello, through his brilliant work shows how life, in all its complexity, cannot be known, but only felt.

Each year Holy Cross honors Italian culture and actively celebrates Italian Heritage Month. This year's celebration is particularly special, as student performers learn to sing in Sicilian dialect and master the italian folk dances and challenging dialogue of such a rare theatrical work.
