Internationally Acclaimed Composer at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Osvaldo Golijov, composer of "La Pasión Según San Marcos" (The Passion according to St. Mark) and associate professor of music at Holy Cross, will deliver a lecture on Monday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in Room 116 of Stein Hall.

In September 2000, Golijov's "Passion" had its world premiere in Stuttgart, Germany, where it opened to fantastic critical acclaim. The Los Angeles Times called the piece "transcendent…a magnificent triumph of Latin American music."

An Argentine-born Jew, Golijov was chosen by conductor Helmut Rilling to compose this original work for the 250-year commemoration of Bach’s death. Only three other people on the planet were selected for this honor.

On Thursday, Feb. 8, Golijov’s "Passion" has its United States debut at Symphony Hall in Boston, performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Schola Cantorum de Caracas.

Golijov's talk is sponsored by the First Year Program at Holy Cross.
