O'Leary Faculty Awards Presented at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Four faculty members at Holy Cross are recipients of the new Arthur J. O'Leary Faculty Recognition Award in acknowledgement of their outstanding work and to encourage their sustained efforts. The O'Leary Awards are intended to honor the recipients, to advance their work and to encourage other members of the faculty to attain a high level of professional achievement and to be a positive influence in the lives of students. The recipients are as follows:

Charles H. Anderton of the economics department has been at Holy Cross since 1986, when he earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University. His areas of expertise are arms trade and proliferation and defense industry issues. The North American editor of the Defence and Peace Economics journal, he has also served as an economist for the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Anderton is the author of “Economics of Arms Reduction and the Peace Process.” While at Holy Cross, Anderton has served on many College committees, including the Finance Committee, Academic Affairs Council and the Task Force on Information Technology. He is a resident of Auburn.

James M. Kee of the English department has been at Holy Cross since 1981. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1982, and his areas of expertise include contemporary literary theory, medieval literature, and religion and literature. In addition to serving on numerous College committees, Kee has previously served as dean for six years and as acting dean for a year. He is the author of numerous articles on literature including, “‘Postmodern’ Thinking and the Status the Religious, Religion and Literature” and “Typology and Tradition: Refiguring the Bible in Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost.’” He is a resident of Paxton.

Karen Turner of the history department has been at Holy Cross since 1987. The author of “Even the Women Must Fight: Memoirs of War from North Vietnam,” “China Bound: A Guide to Academic Life and Work in the PRC” and “Limits of the Rule of Law in China,” Turner earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1983. She specializes in early Chinese legal history, modern Chinese history and culture, family in East Asia, and pre-modern Vietnamese history and culture. She has recently co-produced a film about Vietnam, titled “Hidden Warriors: Voices from the Ho Chi Minh Trail.” She is a resident of Worcester.

Amy R. Wolfson of the psychology department has been at Holy Cross since 1992. A licensed psychologist, she earned her Ph.D. from Washington University in 1987. Wolfson is the co-author of a landmark study on early school start times and the sleep-wake patterns of adolescents and children. Her other areas of expertise include women’s physical and mental health; she is currently director of the women’s studies concentration at Holy Cross. She is the author of the newly-published “The Women’s Book of Sleep.” She is a resident of Worcester.

The Arthur J. O'Leary Faculty Recognition Awards have been made possible by an endowed gift to the College from Thomas H. O’Leary '54, former president, CEO and chairman of Burlington Resources, one of the largest independent oil and gas companies in the United States. The two-year stipend award was established in the name of O'Leary’s father, Arthur, Holy Cross class of 1920. It will be given annually by the Provost.
