Author Colson Whitehead to Give Reading at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Author Colson Whitehead will give a reading on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. in the Brooks Concert Hall. Sponsored by the First Year Program, this event is free and open to the public.

Whitehead is author of "The Intuitionist" (1999), a New York Times "Notable Book" of 1999 and a San Francisco Chronicle "Best Book of the Year." It is a unique detective story about a black female elevator inspector in a city resembling 1960s New York.

Most recently, he published "John Henry Days" (2001), profiled in the New York Times Sunday Book Review and in The New Yorker by author John Updike. The book is a reflection on the legendary black folk hero of superhuman might who proved his courage in a contest of strength, only to die of exhaustion right after his triumph. In both novels, Whitehead uses humor and poignancy to explore the topic of racism.

Born in New York City in 1969, Whitehead graduated from Harvard University in 1991. His journalism has appeared in numerous publications, including the "Village Voice." He lives in Brooklyn.
