"Loyalty, excellence, reverence, commitment, a capacity to enjoy life: where do these virtues which reflect the spirit of Holy Cross come to the surface?

"They appear wherever the men and women of Holy Cross are found: in the faces of students on their first day; in the atmosphere of concentration in the libraries and the labs, in the buzz of conversation in the dorms and dining hall, in new insights in the classrooms and excitement in the theater and concert hall; on the playing fields, the ice and the water; in the handshakes, smiles, and tears of Commencement day; in the voices of graduates vowing marriage in the campus chapel; in the handshakes and smiles at homecoming and regional meetings; in the series of personal achievement and the statistics about generosity; at the reunions, with all their memories and friendships; in the silent witness of those whose names are engraved in stone in the campus cemetery and on tablets in the St. Joseph Memorial Chapel; in sharing an approach to life that makes all the difference - ad maiorem Dei gloriam, men and women for others; in the pride of belonging to Holy Cross, not just for what it gives but also for what it asks.

" 'Spirits loyal, true, and strong,' runs a line in the Alma Mater. After 150 years, those words still have meaning. Their challenge is firmly in place."
