Holy Cross Students Earn Prestigious Fulbright Awards

The following Holy Cross seniors recently received prestigious Fulbright awards to teach and conduct research in foreign countries upon their graduation from Holy Cross:

Aidyn L. Mancenido, a double major in history and Spanish with a concentration in Latin-American studies, will travel to Spain to conduct research at the University of Granada. She will study the Roma (Gypsy) culture in Granada. A resident of Danbury, Conn., Aidyn is fluent in Spanish and proficient in Filipino. She spent a summer in Peru and her junior year abroad in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Aidyn is co-president of both the Spanish Honor Society and the Asian Students for International Awareness group on campus. She has been a member of the College's Women's Forum, Mock Trial Team and Student Government Association. Her volunteer activities include coordinating student visits to a local soup kitchen and working with an Argentinean refugee family.

Evan K. McCarthy, a double major in history and Russian, will travel to Estonia to conduct research at the University of Tartu. He will study ethnic tension in Estonia between the Russian minority and the Estonians. A resident of Aurora, Ohio, Evan was the co-editor of the Russian department newspaper and co-president of the College's Russian Club. He spent a summer in Germany and his junior year abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he became fluent in the Russian language. Evan was the music research assistant for soprano Maria Ferrante and volunteered his time to tutor Russian youth in English.

Katherine E. Rork, a medieval and Renaissance studies major with a visual art history minor, will travel to South Korea to teach English as a foreign language. A resident of Londonderry, N.H., Katherine was an active participant in Holy Cross' "Sacred Spaces" art exhibit and the Medieval Christian Art Project. She was a member of both the College's Poetry Circle and Outing Club for four years. Katherine has also participated in Holy Cross' community service programs by tutoring Vietnamese children and building low-income housing over her spring break.

A fourth Fulbright finalist, Angela Archambault, from Whitinsville, Mass., is awaiting word on her application to teach English to high school students in France. She has already been awarded a teaching assistantship from the French Embassy, however, so she will be in France next year in either case. Angela is a member of the varsity crew team and has worked in the Holy Cross Music Library. She is a double major in English and French and spent her junior year at Universite de Bourgogne, Dijon, France, where she also was employed as an English language assistant at Lycee Jean-Marc Boivin.

These students join the two winners of Austrian Fulbright teaching assistantships, Michael Cassaro and Alexandra Williams.
