Author of Fast Food Nation to Speak at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Eric Schlosser, author of The New York Times best seller Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, will deliver the second annual Condé Nast Lecture on Media, Ethics and Values at Holy Cross on Wed., Sept 10 at 7 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. The lecture is free and open to the public.

A survey of the social, economic and environmental impacts of the fast food business, Fast Food Nation examines America's love for hamburgers and fried chicken from its beginnings in the 1950s to the present.

Eric Schlosser is a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly. He has received a number of journalistic honors, including a National Magazine Award. Fast Food Nation is his first book.

All incoming freshmen at Holy Cross were required to read Fast Food Nation over the summer. The book was selected because it deals with a number of social issues that affect our nation, including the role of advertising, the purity of the nation's food supply, and the health implications of the "all-American meal." Schlosser will speak in First-Year Program classes on Sept. 10 and 11.

USA Today describes Fast Food Nation as "the kind of book that you hope young people read because it demonstrates far better than any social studies class the need for government regulation, the unchecked power of multinational corporations and the importance of our everyday decisions."
