Holy Cross to Host USA Patriot Act Debate

WORCESTER, Mass. – In response to the recent controversy over the USA Patriot Act, the Peace and Conflict Studies program at Holy Cross will host a debate on Tuesday, October 7 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. in room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Panel experts for the debate include:

* Michael Sullivan, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, whose office oversees all Patriot Act-related investigations and prosecutions in the state.

* Martha Martini, a lawyer in private practice and advocate of reforms in legal education.

* Nancy Murray of the Boston office of the ACLU.

* Lisa Kling, an American Muslim lawyer in private practice who has worked extensively with Muslim immigrants facing registration with the INS and possible detention and deportation.

Passed in the aftermath of September 11, the USA Patriot Act expands the federal government's powers of criminal investigation and, in the case of non-citizens, of detention and deportation. The Act has generated significant controversy, with supporters arguing that it is essential to facilitate anti-terrorism efforts. Others have charged that the Patriot Act violates our civil liberties, because it allows FBI agents access to the bookstore or library records of any person without their knowledge.
