Holy Cross Walks to Cure Cancer

On Sunday, Sept. 25, Holy Cross will join more than 8,000 people from the local community in the Walk to Cure Cancer, a day of celebration, remembrance, and action.

The College is a flagship sponsor of this 7th annual fundraising event. Over the years, the walk has raised more than $2.7 million to support cutting-edge cancer research at UMass Memorial Cancer Center.

Last year, 200 students, faculty, and staff from Holy Cross participated in the walk, and raised $15,000 - almost double our initial goal. This year, we aim for 300 walkers and will work to raise $30,000 (or $100 per walker).

The Walk to Cure Cancer begins and ends at UMass Medical School, 55 Lake Avenue North, and follows a five-mile (or optional one-mile) loop around Lake Quinsigamond. Every Holy Cross walker will receive a purple T-shirt, with space on the back to write the name of the person for whom you're walking.

Holy Cross participants will meet on campus the day of the walk (Sunday, Sept. 25) at 11 a.m. in the Hogan Main Lounge. Pledge sheets and money will be collected, and T-shirts will be distributed. Bus service to and from UMass Medical School will be provided, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Box lunches will be available on board the bus.

You can find Walker Registration Forms and Sponsor Sign Up Sheets in displays at Cool Beans, Crossroads, and other locations throughout Hogan; as well as in Human Resources, Dinand Library, Public Safety, Cashiers Office and Graphic Arts. They are also available online.

If you’re not available to walk, but would still like to participate, we need help with set-up, distribution of box lunches and T-shirts, collecting registration forms, and other logistics at Hogan the Sunday morning of the Walk. A campus information session will be held on Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. in Hogan 409 to discuss this and other logistics.

UMass Memorial Cancer Center is a worldclass research center in our own backyard. This is our chance to fight back, and to give the medical community the funds needed for cancer research. Every dollar raised brings us closer to a cure.

So, pick up your registration forms, find sponsors, and join us, as Holy Cross Walks to Cure Cancer.
