"In the war on infections, add sugar"

The Boston Globe

A front page Boston Globe story highlighted new research by College of the Holy Cross Trustee James Collins '87, a biomedical engineer and recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant.  The article recounted Collins' frustration over a recurring case of strep throat while on the track team as a student at Holy Cross.  The infection came back 13 times over two years, "ending his college track career," the Globe reported.

Now a researcher at Boston University, Collins and his colleagues have found a way to make persistant bacteria, like his cases of strep throat, susceptible to drugs.  The answer is a sugar and antibiotic cocktail.
