Leading Puerto Rico News Executive to Speak at Holy Cross

Maria Eugenia Ferré Rangel '89, president of Puerto Rico’s largest daily newspaper, El Nuevo Dia, will return to her alma mater, the College of the Holy Cross, to deliver the Thomas More Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rehm Library, Smith Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Thomas More Lecture on Faith, Work and Civic Life honors a graduate of Holy Cross who exemplifies the College’s dedication to the integration of faith and learning. Ferré Rangel, a member of the class of 1989, is also a trustee of the College. In 2001, she and sister Loren Ferré Rangel, who graduated from Holy Cross in 1992, received the College’s prestigious Sanctae Crucis award.

“It will be a great joy to share with the students the importance of understanding that anything we choose to do in life, has to be done with passion, compassion and commitment to the society around us,” Ferré Rangel says.

As president of the family-owned El Nuevo Dia, Ferré Rangel has modernized operational processes in the production and circulation departments, increased advertising, and introduced web and mobile news sites and multimedia.

“Our biggest challenge has been positioning El Nuevo Dia as the ideal information channel for the 21st century, taking it to the digital platform without losing relevance,” she explains. “We accomplished this by carefully studying how our readers approach the news source and by offering them added value information.”

Ferré Rangel is also a member of Pro Arte Musical, Grupo Diarios de America, American Press Institute, Congreso de Lideres de Puerto Rice, Conectarse and Newspapers Association of America.
