'Super Bowl Costs Indiana Stadium Landlord 38% Above Prediction'

In an article on Bloomberg.com, Victor Matheson, associate professor of economics, discusses the overlooked costs that Indiana has incurred as a result of hosting the 2012 Super Bowl. Matheson emphasizes that the budget for the Super Bowl is just one aspect of the total expenses of hosting the sporting event, but it is also important to examine the cost of the newly built stadium as well.

“The budget for the Super Bowl is a fairly small component of the expenditures of the Super Bowl,” said Matheson. “The big expenditure component is the fact that Indianapolis had to build a brand new, almost entirely taxpayer-financed stadium to have any chance to attract the Super Bowl in the first place.”
