'Stop climbing Mt. Everest!'

Providence Journal

In an op-ed for the Providence Journal, Joanne Pierce, professor of religious studies, explains why people should stop climbing Mt. Everest.

She writes, “At this point in the 21st Century, climbing Mt. Everest has become as pointless as going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, and as narcissistic as big-game hunting. Yes, there are many who set their hearts on achieving the goal of reaching Everest's summit, and risk their lives to do it. As many as 250 people have died trying to scale the summit, with several just in the past few weeks. But the deaths in recent years are meaningless, as wasted as an addict's death from a drug overdose.”
