'Remembering 9-11 in Central Massachusetts'

Telegram & Gazette

In an article in the Telegram & Gazette, Edward T. O’Donnell, associate professor of history at the College of the Holy Cross, reflected on the act of memorializing the tragic events of Sept. 11.

“It’s rapidly becoming a classic memorial,” he said, reflecting on the nature of the day and the ways in which people remember it, such as taking moments of silence, lowering flags, and prayer.

“Eventually it will become like the laying of wreaths at Pearl Harbor,” O’Donnell continued. With the historical ambiguity of the future in mind, he also remarked that eventually, the meaning of Sept. 11 “might fit into a larger narrative that we can only guess what it might be.”
