Blog: Jin '15 Looks Forward to Learning About Her Heritage in Beijing

NAME Sophia Jin ’15

HOMETOWN Bayside, N.Y.

AREAS OF STUDY Economics major, studio art minor, and Asian studies concentration

WHERE SHE’S STUDYING Beijing Institute of Education in Beijing

WHY SHE CHOSE BEIJING “I grew up in a Taiwanese American household listening to my parents speak Chinese, but I always took that for granted and decided to speak English at home instead. I’m hoping that a semester of intensive language study in China will help me get in touch with my ethnic roots and allow me to perfect my Chinese communication skills.”

WHAT SHE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO “The sights! I can’t wait to climb the Great Wall, draw sketches of the terracotta soldiers, and celebrate Chinese New Year — in CHINA. I also heard that within the first month, you start having dreams in Chinese.”

WHY SHE'S BLOGGING “Reading the China study abroad blogs helped me decide to go to China, so I want to do the same for prospective ‘study abroaders.’ Also, blogging will keep me in touch with the English language while I’m on oath to solely speak Chinese.”
