The College of the Holy Cross music department will kick off its spring concert series on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. in Brooks Concert Hall with artist-in-residence Saul Bitrán’s Cuarteto Latinoamericano: “Tribute to the Americas.” Cuarteto Latinoamericano is one of the world’s most renowned classical music ensembles, with music presented by Gershwin, Ginastera, Dan Roman, Copland and Leo Brouwer. The leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet for 35, the Cuarteto has toured extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, Israel, China, Japan and New Zealand. They have premiered more than 100 works that were written for them, and are the winners of the 2012 and 2016 Latin Grammys for Best Classical Recording.

Performances this spring include an artists-in-residence concert; a Holy Cross Chamber Players concert featuring Holy Cross Chamber Players Carol Lieberman on violin, Jan Müller-Szeraws on cello and Randall Hodgkinson on piano; and the Gamelan Gita Sari concert.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m., cellist and artist-in-residence Jan Müller-Szeraws and Israeli harp-eminence Sivan Magen will perform. The performance will feature French and Spanish music, including Magen’s own arrangement of the Debussy cello sonata and the famous Suite Popular Española by Manuel de Falla.

On Thursday, March 16, at 8 p.m., the music department will showcase performances by students in the department and artists-in-residence: Adam Golka, Saul Bitrán and Jan Müller-Szeraws. Titled “Faith in Spring: Music and Nature,” the nature-themed program explores the musing, inspiration and search for meaning in some of the gems from the classical repertoire. The program is offered in conjunction with “Stickwork: Just Off the Beaten Track,” created with the help of over 300 volunteers by environmental artist Patrick Dougherty during his Fall 2016 Arts Transcending Borders residency, which is on view through 2017 on the Linden Lane lawn.

On Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m., violinist Markus Placci, pianist Victor Asunción and cellist Jan Müller-Szeraws will join forces in Brooks Concert Hall. The program will include Beethoven’s iconic “Kreutzer Sonata” as well as Tchaikovsky’s epic “Piano Trio” in a program which is part of the international conference “Tolstoy and Spirituality” organized by Predrag Cicovacki, professor of philosophy, and Olga Partan, assistant professor of Russian. This concert is sponsored by the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture and organized by the philosophy, modern languages and literatures and music departments.

The concert series will include the following musical performances on campus throughout the spring semester. All events are free and open to the public. For additional information, please contact the music department events line at 508-793-3503.
