Holy Cross Junior Wins Goldwater Scholarship

WORCESTER, Mass. – Owen Fenton, a member of the College of the Holy Cross class of 2010, has earned a Goldwater Scholarship; he is one of less than 300 students nationally to receive the award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Established in 1986, the scholarships are awarded to students entering their junior or senior year. The one- and two-year scholarships cover a maximum of $7,500 per year, and can be used toward tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

Fenton, a Longmeadow, Mass. native, is a chemistry major. An active member of the Holy Cross community, he is the co-chair of the chemistry department student advisory council. He is also a participant in intramural sports including soccer and volleyball.

Last year, Fenton received an honorable mention from the foundation. He also received the Mrs. Kate C. Power Medal for being the highest ranked student in the sophomore class.

“My ultimate vocational goal is to become a professor of organic chemistry,” said Fenton. “This will allow me to both spread my love of science and develop a unique research program.”

The Goldwater Foundation, a federally endowed agency honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater, was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Awards are made on the basis of merit.
