Amplifying the Voices of Women in Jazz

How Rhiannon Hurst ’25 spotlighted the music of women and nonbinary artists through Holy Cross’ highest academic honor.

"As soon as I stepped into the sphere of jazz, I quickly realized that it was a very testosterone ruled sphere," Hurst said. "Every jam space I would walk into, it was approached as if it was a competition. And when I'd walk into a room and they saw that I was a woman, or heard I was a vocalist, it was automatically assumed that I didn't know anythign about jazz history, theory, ear training styles or how to even lead a band. And that's when my drive to prove them all wrong began."
