Blog: For Illinois Native Nepomuceno ’14, Holy Cross Stood Out from Other Colleges

NAME Lauren Nepomuceno ’14 HOMETOWN Flossmoor, Ill. AREAS OF STUDY Undeclared major in the health professions program

WHY SHE CHOSE HOLY CROSS “During my college summer tours, most of the schools became a blur. It became difficult to distinguish between schools, but Holy Cross stood out. I fell in love with the campus. The surroundings immediately brought me back to the close niche I felt at home and I knew it would be an easy transition from my small Midwest home to here. The academic rigor and the exclusive focus on undergraduate education sealed the deal as I aspire to become a physician. On top of all these reasons to apply to this school, my mom —an alumna of Jesuit University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines — loves the philosophy of Jesuit education.”

ACTIVITIES “I am in American Medical Student Association, political debate club, intramural soccer, volunteering in the Salvation Army after school program through the Student Programs for Urban Development community organization. I will soon become involved in volunteering in St. Vincent Hospital and Habitat for Humanity. On my free time, I play piano.” WHAT SHE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO “I am most looking forward to finding that ‘forte’. I’m just an average kid with no clue what I want to major in, but I’m positive I’m talented in something. What that is I have no idea. I am also excited to meet more people and make new friends.” WHY SHE’S BLOGGING “I’ve decided to blog because I believe that prospective students should get a true perspective of life on the Hill. This perspective can only be best provided by a blog. Now here on campus, I am realizing that as a local from Midwest, I am a minority. As far as I know, most people from the Midwest or West Coast don’t know much about the smaller, but still prestigious, schools in the East Coast. That is why I hope to spread the word about Holy Cross in hopes for greater diversity, and reveal the many options and opportunities available to students.” Read the blog »
