"After 46 Years, Papal Jewelry Up For Auction In NC"

The Associated Press

In an Associated Press story about a jeweled cross and ring once owned by Pope Paul VI being auctioned on eBay, Rev. Thomas Worcester, S.J., professor of history at the College of the Holy Cross, spoke about Pope Paul’s donation of the items to the U.N. as a way to raise money to “relieve human suffering.”

"The business of giving away objects of value that also symbolized power, it showed how Pope Paul spoke out a great deal for the poor and the Third World," he told the Associated Press. "He really created a new style of the papacy."
