The College of the Holy Cross is the recipient of a 2011 Paul E. Tsongas Award from Preservation Massachusetts for Campus Commitment. Named for the late senator, the Tsongas Award is Preservation Massachusetts’ highest honor.
The College received this award for its stewardship of the 174-acre campus. “We are pleased to be recognized for our work in creating contemporary buildings and renovating existing structures so they fit with the character and historic nature of our beautiful grounds, as well as with our commitment to environmental sustainability, ,” explains Scott Merrill, director of physical plant. “Holy Cross’ own history is told, in part, by the buildings in which members of our community study, worship, reflect, and debate every day. We are proud to work together to preserve and honor the stories this campus tells.”
Recent construction highlighted by Preservation Massachusetts includes the new Integrated Science Complex, extensive renovations in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel, the student residence Williams Hall, the academic and administrative building Smith Hall, and the construction of the state-of-the-art Seelos Theater within historic Kimball Hall.
“We are extremely excited to honor the work and dedication these educational institutions have made to their historic buildings, their communities and their students”, stated Jim Igoe, president of Preservation Massachusetts. “These projects are models for others within the state of Massachusetts and beyond.”
This year’s honorees were culled from nominations submitted by schools, trustees, architecture firms, constructions companies, elected officials and local preservation organizations throughout the state. Submissions are judged by several criteria, including historic significance and contribution to strengthening the academic and preservation fabric of the Commonwealth.
Founded in 1985, Preservation Massachusetts is the statewide non-profit advocacy organization that actively promotes the preservation of historic buildings and landscapes as a positive force for economic development and the retention of community character.
