"Women in the Church"

NET NY

In an episode of Mysteries of the Church, an Emmy-nominated documentary style program based in New York that examines the many teachings and beliefs of the Catholic faith, Caroline Johnson Hodge, associate professor of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross, talks about the role of women in the early church.

In a segment about Mary Magdalene, Johnson Hodge shares "In every gospel, she’s the one who finds the empty tomb, who first bears witness to the resurrection.  In several accounts in the Bible, she is the one who receives the first experience of Jesus after he’s been resurrected."

She continues, "She is someone who rallies the apostles together when they’re distraught, they’re fearful for their lives.  She is one who is considered to have the true teachings of Jesus.  And this shows up enough times in these ancient texts that catch our attention and make us think, she really must have been important."
