Rhodes Decision Sets Strict Standard for 'Own Work'

The Chronicle of Higher Education

In a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Anthony Cashman, director of the Office of Distinguished Fellowships and Graduate Studies at College of the Holy Cross, discusses the importance of a student working collaboratively with an advisor while writing a personal statement or essay for a scholarship.

The Rhodes Trust, which awards coveted scholarships to the University of Oxford, announced that in writing application essays, students cannot get any help when developing their work.  In response Cashman argues, “It’s just not the way the real world works. It’s not the way the academic world works.”

Cashman wasn’t alone in his opinions, advisors agree that feedback for students, and in general, is central to writing and learning.
