‘Learn a new culture locally’

The most recent issue of Worcester Magazine featured an upcoming collaboration between the College of the Holy Cross and the non-profit, Arts Indonesia – Gamelan Dharma Swara. Together, they will host the Summer Institute in Balinese Performance on the Holy Cross campus from July 27 to August 2. The program is a week-long opportunity to  learn about the culture of Indonesia’s Bali Island through specialized dance and music workshops with top instructors, including successful Balinese artists and Holy Cross professors who teach courses in Balinese tradition throughout during the academic year.

“Balinese music and dance are very communal in nature and expressive in nature,” said I Made Bandem, who teaches Balinese performing arts in the theatre department. It would be good to introduce this to the Western World, particularly Holy Cross College in this case.”
