Gannon '14 Awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Russia

Rachel Gannon ’14, of Katy, Texas, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Russia where she will teach English to Russian university students during the 2014-15 academic year.

A Russian Studies major, Gannon studied abroad in Moscow last year, and taught English to college students at the Russian State University for the Humanities, where she attended classes. In addition to teaching for the Fulbright program, she also plans to enroll in some university classes in Russia.

Following the Fulbright, Gannon will attend Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in pursuit of a Master of Arts degree in Eurasian, Russian and East European studies. She hopes to work for the U.S. State Department or in international business, focusing on Russia and Eastern Europe. Her other goals include improving her Russian and German language skills, and perhaps learning a few more languages.

At Holy Cross, Gannon is president of the Russian club, co-chair of the Modern Languages and Literatures Student Advisory Committee, and works at Cool Beans, one of the College’s coffee shops. She was also a fall orientation leader in 2011 and 2013.

Each year approximately 1,900 U.S. college students are awarded grants through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship program in international educational exchange, awards grants to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program’s inception in 1946, more than 300,000 participants — selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential — have had the opportunity to observe each other’s political, economic and cultural institutions. The program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.
