Dominic Lovullo, a history and political science major who graduated from Holy Cross this past May, was selected to play with the Boston Red Sox.

Media outlets including ESPN, the Boston Globe, and CBS Boston have been highlighting that Lovullo, 22, son of the Red Sox’s Bench Coach Torey Lovullo, was one of the 30 players selected to play for Boston in this year’s MLB draft.

Lovullo, who plays shortstop, was selected in the 20th round of the draft, according to CBS Boston. Lovullo had also been drafted to Boston in the 34th round last season, but chose to stay at Holy Cross to finish his degree and play ball during his senior year.

“Last year, I could go back to school and there were a lot of options to weigh,” Lovullo told MLB.com. “To hear my name today and to get a couple of phone calls from people working there, it was like a dream come true. I’m beyond blessed and lucky to be able to play for the best organization in baseball.”

While the new Sox player is entering the realm of professional sports, Torey Lovullo told ESPN his son has other fields in mind he might want to explore in the future.

“He wants to just get an opportunity to play pro ball, just go as far as he can for as long as he can and see where it takes him,” said the older Lovullo.”I know he has interest in maybe working in baseball when he’s done. He has a lot of thoughts. Law school, he wants to be a politician. But for right now baseball’s in the forefront for him.”
