Could the split between China and the Vatican be on the mend? Tom Landy, director of the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture, and a lecturer in sociology and anthropology, discusses how a Sino-Vatican rapprochement over the power to appoint bishops would allow “underground” and “aboveground” churches in China to unite. Landy, who was recently recognized for his contributions to Catholic higher education, has conducted significant research on the lives and practices of ordinary lay Catholics in cultural contexts.
