English Professor Writes on ‘Contemplating our founding documents, and what they mean’

In the wake of President Trump’s executive orders on immigration, Leila Philip, associate professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross, felt compelled to visit the National Archives in Washington D.C. in search of seeing “those precious words ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’” in the Declaration of Independence, according to a recent opinion piece she authored in the Boston Globe. Philip recalls her exchanges with other visitors and reflections on our country’s founding documents.
