When President-elect Joe Biden assumes office in January, he will become only the second Catholic president in U.S. history, following John F. Kennedy.

In an interview with Boston 25 News, Mathew Schmalz, professor of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross, talked about the significance of this historic moment for the more than 70 million Catholics in the U.S.

“In some ways, this is a Catholic moment, not only with Joe Biden being elected president, but with the majority members of the Supreme Court. There will be a lot of discussion about the place of Catholicism in public life,” said Schmalz.

Despite that, Schmalz said he doesn’t think it will move the needle when it comes to mass attendance, but it will likely move the needle on dialogue.
