Women Are the Forgotten Heroes of Hanukkah, Says Holy Cross Judaic Studies Professor

The eight-day Jewish festival of Hanukkah is a time to celebrate heroes, but the identity of these heroes can be elusive.

In an article for The Conversation, Alan Avery-Peck, Kraft-Hiatt professor in Judaic studies at Holy Cross, breaks down the origin of Hanukkah and shares the lesser-known stories of Judith and Hannah, the women heroines who helped free the Jews from oppressive rulers.

"On the surface, it's a story of male heroism," said Avery-Peck. "But as a professor of Jewish history, I believe that seeing Hanukkah this way misses the inspiring women who were prominent in the earliest tellings of the story."
