High School Students to Participate in 36th Annual Classics Day at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross will hold the 36th annual Classics Day on Thursday, April 17. Designed to familiarize students with the Holy Cross Classics department, its faculty and current students, the event features a variety of activities relating to the study of Roman culture.

Each spring the Classics Department invites students from local New England high schools to participate in this day of contests, including a Certamen, Costume Contest and Chariot Race. This year there will be over 500 participants from 18 different schools. Participants include Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, Classical High School (Providence, R.I.), Coyle Cassidy High School (Taunton), Doherty High School, Holyoke High School, Hopkinton High School, Littleton High School, Lunenburg High School, The Newman School (Boston), Portsmouth Abbey School (Portsmouth, R.I.), Reading Memorial High School, St. George’s School (Newport, R.I.), St. Sebastian’s School (Needham), Shrewsbury High School, Trivium School (So. Lancaster), Wachusett Regional High School, Walpole High School, and Westborough High School.

The schedule of events is as follows:

  • Registration 9 – 9:30 a.m., Hogan Campus Center 3rd Floor Lobby
  • Welcoming Address
  • 9:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m., Hogan Campus Center Ballroom
  • Upper and Lower Division Certamen (Certamen is Latin for “competition.” Student teams will compete College Bowl style, answering questions concerning Roman history, mythology, culture and the Latin language.) Costume Contest 10 – 11 a.m., Hogan Campus Center Ballroom
  • Chariot Races (Student teams build their own chariots. Each team consists of a rider and student “horses.”) 11  – 11:30 a.m., Hart Center
  • Lunch 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Kimball Dining Hall
  • Final Round Certamen 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Hogan Campus Center Ballroom
  • Awards Presentation 1:30 – 1:45 p.m., Hogan Campus Center Ballroom
