Holy Cross’ Cantor Art Gallery Chosen for Conservation Assessment Program

The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross has been chosen to participate in the 2011 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) sponsored by Heritage Preservation and The National Institute for Conservation, in Washington, D.C.

The Cantor Gallery joins 2,600 museums that have participated in CAP in its 21-year history of serving small museums. Supported through a cooperative agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, CAP assists museums by providing funds for professional conservation specialists to identify the conservation needs of their collections and recommend ways to correctly improve collections conditions.

Heritage Preservation’s president, Lawrence L. Reger, praised the Cantor Art Gallery for “making the vital work of caring for collections a priority of their institution, even in these challenging financial times, and helping ensure that they are available to present to future generations.”

CAP provides a general conservation assessment of the gallery’s collection. A professional conservator will spend two days surveying the site and three days preparing a comprehensive report that will identify conservation priorities. The on-site consultation will enable the Cantor Gallery to evaluate its current collections care policies, procedures, and environmental conditions. The assessment report will help the gallery make appropriate improvements.

“Our goal for participating in the program is to establish an overall review of the conditions and conservation needs of the Cantor Gallery’s growing fine arts collection,” says Roger Hankins, director of the gallery.

Through the on-going generosity of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, alumni, and friends of the gallery, the Cantor Art Gallery’s collection includes works in a variety of media, as well as an Indonesian textile study collection comprised of both contemporary and historical material.

Founded in 1983 with support from of Iris & B. Gerald Cantor, the Cantor Art Gallery serves both as a venue for a changing series of historical and contemporary public exhibitions, as well as a vital resource for Holy Cross faculty and students, linking exhibitions to the broader liberal arts curriculum.
