Holy Cross Seniors Earn Highly Competitive Scholarships from National Hispanic Honor Society

WORCESTER, Mass. – Cathryn O’Connor and Caitrin O’Sullivan, seniors majoring in Spanish at the College of the Holy Cross, have been awarded scholarships for advanced language study from Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.

O’Connor, who is minoring in philosophy, won one of only six scholarships available nationally for study at the Estudio Internacional Sampere (EIS) centers in Madrid, Salamanca, El Puerto de Santa Maria this summer. She lives in Milton.

At Holy Cross, O’Connor is the president of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society, where she helps run the Spanish Writing Workshop and works on Fósforo, the annual Spanish and English literary magazine featuring students and faculty published at Holy Cross.

She is considering attaining a master’s in Spanish and pursuing a career in international marketing and advertising.

O’Sullivan, who is double majoring in psychology, won one of only 14 scholarships available nationally for study at the Universidad Internacional / The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies of Cuernavaca, Mexico this summer. She lives in Middletown, N.J.

At Holy Cross, O’Sullivan is a member of Sigma Delta Pi, where she is also involved in the Spanish Writing Workshop and works on Fósforo; treasurer of the Spanish Club; Student Programs for Urban Development; women’s rugby football crew team; and Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society.

After completing her scholarship, she plans on moving to Beijing to study Mandarin Chinese, and hopes to incorporate her language skills in a future career.
