WORCESTER, Mass. – The music department and the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture at the College of the Holy Cross present the internationally renowned Borromeo String Quartet, on Thursday, April 10 at 8 p.m. in Brooks Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Nationally and internationally acclaimed since its debut in 1989, the group includes violinists Nicholas Kitchen and Kristopher Tong, violist Mai Motobuchi, and cellist Yeesun Kim. They will be playing the works of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
The Quartet plays the compositions of several contemporary composers including the world renowned Osvaldo Golijov, Loyola Professor of Music at Holy Cross.
Their repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary pieces, and they perform over 100 concerts across the world each season. Abroad, the group plays in some of the most famous concert halls including the Philharmonie, Casals Halls, the Concertgebouw, Opera Bastille, and Wigmore Hall. In the U.S. they have performed at Weill Recital Hall, Jordan Hall, the Library of Congress and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.
The Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2007 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 2006 the Aaron Copland House created the Borromeo Quartet Award to acknowledge the group’s commitment to contemporary music and annually honor the work of young composers to audiences internationally. They were also the winners of the Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, the Cleveland Quartet Award, the Ensemble-In-Residence for National Public Radio’s Performance Today, and received the top prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France.
In 2003, the Borromeo made classical music history by starting their own record label, the Living Archive Recorded Performance Series, which allows people to order their music from around the world. They are presently recording the complete quartets of Bela Bartok.
