WORCESTER, Mass. – Dick and Rick Hoyt, the father-son team who have overcome disabilities to compete in triathlons, Ironmans, marathons and road races throughout the world, will give a presentation "Together - You Can Do Anything!" on Thursday, Feb.5 at 7 p.m. in the Seelos Theatre at the College of the Holy Cross. The event, sponsored by Montserrat—a new living-learning program that immediately immerses first-year students in an intensive academic experience, complemented by residential and co-curricular activities—is free and open to the public.
Rick Hoyt, who uses a wheel chair, and his father have competed in the Boston Marathon 26 times and in Ironman Triathlons six times. Together, Rick and Dick have formed “Team Hoyt” and they compete around the world doing marathons and triathlons.
The Hoyts have competed in over 995 athletic events in the last 29 years. Dick, 68, is a retired Lt. Colonel, having served in the military for 37 years. Rick, 47, is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in Special Education. They also travel the country doing corporate and community presentations, educating the public about disability awareness and promoting the Team Hoyt motto, “Yes You Can”.
Dick and Rick were inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame this past October. They plan on competing in their 1000th race event in April during their 27th Boston Marathon.
In 2002, Dick and Rick wrote a book titled It’s Only a Mountain which tells their story through 2000. They are in the process of writing a second book with New York Times Best Selling Author Don Yaeger, to pick up where they left off in 2000.
